It turned out that the train was not headed\nonly to Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan, that was going to be our stop, but all the\nway to Tashkent in Uzbekistan. Therefore, the train was not Russian, as we had\nhoped for, and not even Kazakh, but from Uzbekistan.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The first shock<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we entered the train, we realized\nthat this was a serious downgrade from the comfortable train rides we had in\nRussia. At first it was a small shock. The train was much more aged. It was hot\nand the smell was not what we would describe fresh, maybe more something like\ndirty laundry and horse sausage. The other passengers in our carriage were mostly\nolder men. They had huge bags and even some wide screen TV\u2019s with them \u2013 seems\nlike the Uzbek men travel to Russia to do some shopping. Even our beds and the\nshelves above them were full of someone else\u2019s bags, so that we couldn\u2019t fit\nours anywhere. Also, there was one man sitting at our place. As we tried to\ntell him he was on a wrong seat, he didn\u2019t show any interest in moving. And the toilets&#8230; The first time we entered, the floor was\nfloating, and the walls were covered in splashes too. So much that Johanna had\nto throw away the slippers she had gotten from the Russian train, as they got\nsoaking wet. Everything you put to the toilet goes straight to the rails. There\nwas no toilet paper, but we figured that the coke bottle cut in half, hanging\non the wall, was meant for taking water from the tap to wash your ass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting comfortable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best parts about travelling\nis that you adapt to things that are new or \u201cstrange\u201d to you, that you broaden\nyour comfort zone and, above all, get rid of your prejudices. This is what\nhappened to us after a while. As we got over our little shock of being the\npassengers of an Uzbek train instead of a Russian one, and made ourselves\ncomfortable there, we realized it was all good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old men next to us were friendly, as\nwere the train staff too. The men tried to talk to us but once again, because\nof us not knowing their language, it was hard. One of them gave us some sweet\ntreats to eat and showed us from a map where he was from. The others helped us\nstupid tourists with sign language when we wondered how things worked or where\nto stuff our bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It turned out that the bags on our bed\nwere filled with sheets. It seemed that the personnel were\ncleaning the train often and later the floors of the toilet were not that wet\nanymore. Even a roll of toilet paper appeared some kilometers before the border\nto Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also a samovar which is the savior\nof every train ride. Until now we had washed our cups in the sink of the toilet\nbut then one of the men working in the train showed us that we can do it by the\nsamovar too. We didn\u2019t buy any, though, since we were 99,7% sure it all contained meat. The hazzle started some time before sunrise and lasted over two hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The officers on the Russian side of the\nborder were strict and very precise. They went through the wagon with and\nwithout a dog several times. One officer walked directly to us. \u201cGet up\u201d, \u201csit\ndown\u201d, \u201cwhy were you in Russia?\u201d We didn\u2019t have to unpack our bags, unlike many\nfellow passengers, but we have probably never before had such detailed passport\ncontrol on any border. They inspected every single page with different kind of lights. Finally, we got our exit stamps and the train started to move again.\nIt felt like a win already when the border control on the Russian side was\nover. It was surprising that they did it so thorough, considering that we were\nall leaving their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we arrived at Kazakhstan\u2019s side of\nthe border it was light already. The Kazakhs seemed relatively relaxed. Again,\na cute dog came in and sniffed around a little bit. Then they controlled some\nbags. In one bag they found a toy gun, tried it out and put it back. They also\nwanted Seri to open his bag but as he opened it, the guy smiled and told it\u2019s\nfine. The only question we had to answer was the purpose of our visit. After we\nhad posed for some pictures, we got our passports and immigration cards stamped.&nbsp;It\ntook almost three hours until we all could go back to sleep and enjoy the rest\nof the train ride. We slept long and followed our daily\ntrain routines with preparing food and writing. Also, we realized the landscape\nchanged quite much. From birch and needle tree forests to grassy steppe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But finally, here we are in Kazakhstan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image postimage\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
