It also seems to be a popular way for the locals to spend their free time. We visited two natural attractions next to Almaty: The Big Almaty Lake and the Butakovka Waterfall.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Big Almaty Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve seen many pictures of the bright\nturquoise Big Almaty Lake on the internet. Now we wanted to see the lake with our\nown eyes to know if the pictures were heavily photoshopped or if the lake\nreally looked like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image postimage\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090224-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090224-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090224-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090224-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090224.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting there<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Big Almaty Lake must be one of the most\npopular attractions around Almaty. It is located 15 kilometers away from the\ncity, high up on the mountains. Still, there is no public transport going all\nthe way up there so you have to go on an organized tour or improvise a little\nbit. We knew that we could take two buses to get more near and then take a taxi\nor hitch a ride for the rest of the way. We waited for more than half an hour\nfor the first but it never came. Apparently it was on a special route because\nsome roads were closed that day. So we gave up and ordered a ride through\nYandex. After a few minutes the driver started saying \u201dsorry, sorry, sorry\u201d and\nwanted us to get out. He had just now realized where we wanted to go and\napparently his car wasn\u2019t made for the steep mountain roads. The next Yandex\ndriver had a more powerful vehicle and finally we were on our way. The views on\nthe way were getting better and better. Near the lake there was already a\ntraffic jam. It was a Saturday morning and we were clearly not the only people\nthere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At the lake<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image postimage\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090169-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"The view from the road\" class=\"wp-image-1699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090169-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090169-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090169-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/P1090169-1.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The view from the road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we saw the lake. The view was\nbreathtaking. It looked exactly like in the pictures we\u2019ve seen before, if not\neven more beautiful and more turquoise. The tap water of Almaty is coming from\nthis Lake, therefore you\u2019re not allowed to swim in it. So you can walk around\nit, have a picnic, or queue to take a selfie on top of a stone, like most of\nthe people seemed to be doing. We went for a little walk. It was so nice to be\nin the nature, since so far we\u2019ve been mostly in the cities or on vehicles\nsince we left Finland. We didn\u2019t walk around the whole lake though, and\napparently it\u2019s not even possible. There was some army guy yelling something in\nRussian to a megaphone when we got more near to the dam on top of which he was\nsitting on. By that time the place was completely crowded and the traffic jam on\nthe mountain was massive. There would have been taxis up there, but we (or\nJohanna) thought it would be nice to still walk a little bit and hitch a ride\nlater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The walk along the road was not that interesting, but we\u2019ve read from some blog that we could follow the water pipe leading down from the lake in order to get down faster. We saw people coming up, walking directly on the pipe, so we decided to give it a go, too. Johanna was a little bit scared and took little steps. Latest, when the pipe rose up from the ground to cross a river and Johanna started to crawl on it, we realized that this was not going to work out. Anyway, walking down on the pipe would have been completely senseless \u2013 it would have taken hours, even for a normal, non-scared person. We didn\u2019t\nsee any buses there, though, so we continued walking. According to our maps\nthere should have been a bus stop nearby but we couldn\u2019t find it. We were\nalready starting to lose our nerves. It would have been so much easier just to\nget in a taxi on the top. But then some local men walked by and ordered a dark\ncab. There was space for us, too. The men didn\u2019t go far, but the driver agreed\nto bring us to our hostel. The best it\u2019s known for its ice skating rink, but it\u2019s also the\nstarting point for several hikes. As Seri has been sick the last days, we\nwanted to start with something relatively easy. We\u2019ve read that you can reach\nthe Butakovka waterfall effortlessly in two hours, and that it would be a good\nhike for children, too. Apparently we are not in our best fit at the moment, as\nwe didn\u2019t find it THAT easy and were sweating like hell along the way, but the\nhike was enjoyable nevertheless. We didn\u2019t find any buses and later it turned out that we were not\neven in the right village. But as Seri tried to ask some older couple about\nbuses to Almaty, they just assumed we wanted a ride to Almaty from them. So\nthey told us to hop on to their car and so we got back to Almaty.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7cb5934
