During the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"painful nine-hour ride to Skardu (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/en\/2019\/12\/11\/way-from-gilgit-to-skardu-pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>painful nine-hour ride to Skardu<\/strong><\/a>, we thought that the place must be prettttty amazing to compensate the trouble getting there. So it was worth taking the time to see this part of Gilgit-Baltistan, too. Most of the people are Balti people, descendants of Tibetans. Their language, Balti, is an ancient form of Tibetan. Thus, the city\u2019s nickname, Little Tibet of Pakistan. We wouldn\u2019t say that the city otherwise has much of Tibetan flare, though. The Balti-Tibetans converted to Islam many centuries ago and the main religion nowadays is Islam. It\u2019s also a hub for many treks in the mountains, the most notable of them being the world\u2019s second tallest mountain, K2. We didn\u2019t do any trekking there, though. It would be already cold and snowy on the mountains (and we were lazy).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The fort, the views and some road tripping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image postimage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P1110425-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P1110425-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P1110425-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P1110425-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P1110425.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The Kharpocho Fort<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We got our first glimpse of the area\u2019s nature by climbing up to the Kharpocho fort. After walking all the way up, we were quite disappointed to see that the door was closed. Luckily, we stayed by the door, admiring the view for some time. Soon we saw a cute grandpa, carrying a heavy water canister on his back, getting up the stony path. The crumbled walls of what is left of the fort nowadays were charming in a way. And the view from the top was marvelous. During our roadtrip we visited the Cold Desert and a nearby valley named Shigar. Here\u2019s the story about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"our roadtrip to Skardu (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/2019\/12\/25\/roadtrip-skardu-shigar-valley\" target=\"_blank\">our roadtrip to Shigar Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lovely people in a busy city<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise we spent some time walking around in the city. Just to give you an example: A guy was trying to lure us into his gift shop. We didn\u2019t want to buy anything but because he didn\u2019t give up, we decided to have a look, just for fun. It turned out that he didn\u2019t even want to sell us anything. He just wanted to give us small gemstones as a present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, in a restaurant we visited, one of the workers asked to be photographed with us and seemed very excited about it. The local soup, that consists of beans and barley was really good and had a hint of mint in it. Also, Skardu was the place where we got finally hooked on Pakistani sweets. We found a great sweets store and visited so many times that we probably gained a few kilos already during our short stay.
