Now it was time to start our journey towards the last station of our road trip, Yangon. We wouldn\u2019t be able to drive the whole way in one go, so we were planning to spend the night in Taungoo, a bit over 200 kilometers from Loikaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judging by the map, the road ahead of us\nlooked insanely curvy. And that it definitely turned out to be. This was no doubt\nthe most demanding day of our road trip from Mandalay to Yangon. The one <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"from Loikaw (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/2021\/01\/29\/myanmar-on-a-motorbike-part-5-loikaw-and-around\/\" target=\"_blank\">from Loikaw<\/a> to Yangon was among them. Therefore, we would need to take the old road from Loikaw to Taungoo, which zigzags over the mountains. When we told him, we\nwere going to drive to Taungoo, he started to wave his arm and yell \u201cno, no,\nno!\u201d We asked why, and he answered by gesturing a windy road and said\n\u201cadventure!\u201d Well, we are always up for adventures, but have to admit, that it\nwas a bit hard to catch sleep that night\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards the mountains and over them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Google maps, the 200+\nkilometers from Loikaw to Taungoo should take less than six hours. We knew that\nwe\u2019d need more than that. We started off from Loikaw so early that we would\nhave nine hours until it gets dark. That has to be enough, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first part of the journey we drove the same way that we had taken to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodridestories.com\/2021\/02\/11\/myanmar-on-a-motorbike-part-6-kayan-lahwi-pan-pet-villages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"villages of the Kayan Lahwi tribe (opens in a new tab)\">villages of the Kayan Lahwi tribe<\/a> the previous day. The owner of the restaurant\nsaid that the journey would still be long but that it should all go well if we\ngo slow and steady. On the border there was a check point. We had\nseen similar check points already on previous days of our road trip, but this\nwas the first one where they stopped us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two police officers with very serious faces\nand a machine gun asked to see our passports and the license of the motorbike,\nwhich we had gotten from Discovery Rides when renting out the bike. We didn\u2019t\nhave a common language with the officers, so we didn\u2019t understand what they\nwere asking, but we tried to explain our route and tell where we are from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After writing down our data and inspecting\nthe motorbike, the men asked a third officer to come over. While we waited for\nhim, one of the two officers tried to lighten the atmosphere by goofing around\nwearing Seri\u2019s sunglasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third policeman wanted to see our\npassports and the motorbike\u2019s license, again. After that he asked for an\ninternational driving license. In fact, Seri\u2019s international license is not mentioning\nmotorbikes, so he decided to hand his Austrian driving license, instead. While\nthe man inspected the license, we were quietly thinking in our heads, if our\nroad trip was going to end sooner than planned. But soon the officer flashed a\nlittle smile and showed us to continue our way. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The endless downhill and its endless curves\n<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After we had crossed one mountain, another\none appeared. And another one. And another one. Even though we were really\nenjoying the views and the little villages on the way, soon we started to\nquestion, if these curves would never end. It felt like, apart from a few little uphills, that the\nwhole way was one long downhill. The journey started to feel tiring to us, but\nthe most tiring it must have been for our Enfield. We were two passengers with\nour bags on top of it, after all. Despite using a lot of engine braking, every\nnow and then the brakes started to make such loud squeaking sound, that we had\nto stop to cool them off. The whole day we drove the same way with a funny gang\nwith three persons on one scooter. Almost the whole way the road was more or less\npaved, even though sometimes the pavement was quite cracked. On this stretch\nthere were also only a couple of small construction sites. We thought that the rest of the way would be easier and faster, but oh how wrong we were.
